The History of Toll Cottage
oll Cottage is the original toll house for collecting monies from travellers as they went on

their way into and out of Ayr. The house was built in the 18 th century, constructed from sandstone and winstone, however it has changed size and shape many times since then. Originally a one level, two-roomed house for the toll keeper of the day, it was extended in 1927 to include two upstairs bedrooms and a small kitchen. The front door was originally on the roadside but was moved to the rear of the house. The original grounds were small and compact with soft fruits grown on the land where the driveway and main garden now are. Further modernisation was carried out in 1998, turning the house around to face the hills and adding the master bedroom, an enlarged kitchen and utility room.
ollybush Estate owned the cottage until 1967. The main estate is centred on Hollybush House, its walled gardens can still be seen from the upstairs bedrooms. Hollybush House is now the Queen Mothers Home for Retired Servicemen and the beautiful grounds with surrounding wood and river can be explored at your leisure.
